Over 12,000 Airtel subscribers have signed up to participate in boycotting Airtel services on Wednesday 9th November 2011. The subscribers have cited poor customer care services among other issues for the boycott.

The subscribers have taken advantage of social media, particularly Facebook and twitter to organizer the boycott. They have also been sending sms to those who are not on social media in a bid to have more people participate in the boycott. So far the response has been overwhelming and the boycott is set to take place from 08:00 to 17:00 hrs tomorrow.

Administrators of the Facebook event known as “BOYCOTT AIRTEL FOR 9 HOURS ON WEDNESDAY” say that this action is necessary because Airtel has not been listening to the complaints of the subscribers.

“Airtel has a terrible crisis management system in place and they do not have respect for the subscribers as long as they are making a profit,” says Brian Matambo.

“We hope that Airtel will understand subscribers to be stakeholders and take their concerns and complaints seriously. We believe Airtel has the capacity to offer its four million subscribers a world class service and it is sheer negligence that they are providing a service that has warranted this boycott,” Mr. Matambo added.

Other complaints that subscribers have cited for the boycott are:

·         The unprofessional attitude of the customer care operators

·         Increase in Cheza from K2 to K5

·         Promises that have not been fulfilled regard promotions such as the royalty program

·         The unjustifiably high cost of internet bundle

·         The K100 charge on the “missed call” service

·         The Selling of K5,000 airtime scratch cards at K5,500

Other complaints are specific to individual subscribers.

During the boycott subscribers will refrain from sending sms, making, calls, or buying any Airtel scratch cards. They will also not be answering any phone calls from Airtel lines.
